Miami Steel Fabricator Warns of Growing Supply Crisis
Capitol Steel Structures Calls Attention to Steel Market Instability, Rising Costs and Mounting Pressure on Small Businesses
Capitol Steel Structures, a Miami-based, family-owned steel fabrication and erection company, is raising concerns about increasing instability in the U.S. steel market and its growing impact on small and medium-sized businesses.
In a formal letter dated August 5, 2026, Capitol Steel Structures President Ruben Diaz addressed the White House, calling attention to what the company describes as significant challenges facing independent steel distributors, fabricators and related businesses.
According to the company, steel prices have experienced substantial and unpredictable increases in recent years. At the same time, the rapid expansion of data center construction across the United States has created additional demand for structural steel and related products, putting further pressure on the supply chain.
“Large-scale projects are consuming vast quantities of structural steel and related products, resulting in depleted inventories, extended lead times, and escalating costs throughout the market,” Diaz wrote in the letter.
The impact is particularly challenging for smaller companies that do not have the purchasing power or long-term supply agreements available to major corporations.
Capitol Steel Structures says it is increasingly difficult to secure sufficient material at reasonable prices while maintaining the ability to compete for projects. In some cases, rapidly increasing material costs can make projects financially unviable for smaller fabricators, despite having the experience, workforce and capabilities to perform the work.
A Challenge That Extends Beyond Steel
The company emphasizes that the issue extends beyond individual steel businesses.
Steel fabricators and distributors are part of a larger construction ecosystem that includes contractors, manufacturers, developers, builders and local businesses. When material availability is constrained and costs rise rapidly, the effects can move throughout the construction industry and ultimately impact project schedules, budgets and local economies.
Capitol Steel Structures is not calling for reduced investment in American infrastructure, technology or manufacturing. Instead, the company is asking for greater attention to the impact that rapidly increasing demand and supply constraints can have on smaller American businesses.
“We fully support efforts to strengthen American infrastructure, manufacturing, and technological development,” Diaz stated. “However, it is equally important that these initiatives do not unintentionally disadvantage the small businesses that have long contributed to the strength of our nation’s economy and their local communities.”
Capitol Steel Structures Asks the White House for Action
In its August 5 letter, Capitol Steel Structures asked the Administration what steps are being taken to stabilize the steel market and improve steel availability for small businesses.
The company specifically asked whether initiatives are being considered to:
- Address ongoing supply constraints
- Encourage growth in domestic steel production
- Improve transparency within the steel market
- Help smaller companies compete for material on a more level playing field
- Reduce the disproportionate impact of supply shortages and escalating costs on small businesses
For Capitol Steel Structures, the concern is both immediate and broader: How can America continue to expand construction, infrastructure and technology while ensuring that small American businesses remain able to participate in that growth?
Founded in 1973, Capitol Steel Structures is a family-owned steel fabrication and erection company based in Miami, Florida. The company serves customers throughout Florida and has contributed to major commercial, institutional and infrastructure projects across the region.
The company says it will continue to monitor steel market conditions and advocate for policies that support a strong, competitive and sustainable domestic steel industry.
“Small businesses are the backbone of many communities,” Diaz wrote. “Yet we are increasingly bearing the burden of supply shortages and inflationary pressures without a clear path toward relief.”
